Standards Employed

The action research for this website utilizes many Common Core Standards in areas of Mathematics, Speaking, Listening, and Technology.  The students use mathematical standards in translating a math word problem to use quantitative reasoning. Through technology they are able to express their ideas on a platform that empowers them to reinforce their learning. Speaking and Listening is required throughout the treatment so that they may effectively communicate their ideas.

Grade 3 Chapter of the California Mathematics Framework

Standards for Mathematical Practice P. 160

MP.1  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
In third grade, mathematically proficient students know that doing mathematics involves solving problems and discussing how they solved them. Students explain to themselves the meaning of a problem and look for ways to solve it.
MP.2  Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Students recognize that a number represents a specific quantity. They connect the quantity to written symbols and create a logical representation of the problem at hand, considering both the appropriate units involved and the meaning of quantities.
MP.3  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Students may construct arguments using concrete referents, such as objects, pictures, and drawings. They refine their mathematical communication skills as they participate in mathematical discussions that the teacher facilitates by asking questions such as “How did you get that?” and “Why is that true?” Students explain their thinking to others and respond to and critique others’ thinking.

MP.4   Model with Mathematics.
Students represent problem situations in multiple ways using numbers, words (mathematical language), objects, and math drawings. They might also represent a problem by acting it out  or by creating charts, lists, graphs, or equations.

MP.5  Use appropriate tools strategically.
Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools (including drawings or estimation) when solving a mathematical problem and decide when particular tools might  be helpful.

MP.6 Attend to precision.
Students develop mathematical communication skills as they use clear and precise language in their discussions with others and in their own reasoning.
Standards for Speaking and Listening
1.  Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
2.  Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
3.  Ask and answer questions about information from a speaker, offering appropriate elaboration and detail.
4.  Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace
5.  Create engaging audio recordings of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at an understandable pace; add visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details.
6.  Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.
