Common Core Standards and PBL

Common Core standards imply interdisciplinary work from teachers and students. While the Common Core standards themselves vary from grades k-12, there are unifying themes throughout each grade level and subject area. So far, they only specifically emphasize the mathematics and language arts, but offer guidance for subjects such as science and history. Here is an example of the history-social science standards for grades 6-8 (middle school). They emphasize skills and tasks, not content specific knowledge. Many sub-standards address communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Others ask students to use and evaluate digital media. PBL will enhance students' abilities to decipher information and use it to solve real problems.
