Overview

My original Driving Question asked if in-class, GATE programs are effective and do they result in higher than normal levels of ELA growth for each student classified as “GATE”. The Driving Questions evolved and asked if in-class GATE programs promote beyond grade-level growth in ELA? My action research included the following:

  • Students participating in the study were taught using GATE strategies and above-grade-level curriculum at minimum one opportunity per day.
  • The researcher reviewed past and present assessment scores from Houghton Mifflin’s Reading Inventory. The Reading Inventory assessment is given several times each school year to each student in the district. The assessment measures vocabulary and comprehension proficiency with texts students will encounter both in and out of school. A score of 1011 lexile is considered above grade level.
  • To gain knowledge of student engagement, a survey was created using Google Forms and given to all classroom students. The survey included questions related to their past and current educational experiences. Parents of students participating in the GATE study were also given the survey and asked to answer the same questions (from the perspective of their child’s educational experiences).
