Sustained Silent Reading Activity
I noticed a lack of engagement with their book and the activity as a whole. Students often made negative comments when they were asked to get their library book out for SSR. During math however, use of technology kept the engagement high leading me to inquire how technology could be used during SSR, helping to engage students successfully, in order for them to improve comprehension and engagement with writing prompts and allow me the flexibility to work with small groups or one on one in the classroom.
Online platforms for Independent Reading
The purpose of this study was to use a technology tool or program to engage students during independent reading and therefore improve participation in a specific task giving me the ability to provide quality small group time.
All teachers need time to provide small group instruction or time for one on one testing and all students need to practice reading and fluency and have exposure to academic language and content. Small groups allow teachers to work more closely with each student on specific learning objectives and provide targeted differentiated instruction.
We also need a tool that will keep or students engaged in a meaningful way.
