Research is supposed to go sideways (right?)

When Evrim and I set out to write this reseach study back in September, there's no way we could have predicted everything that would happen along the way. Initially, we set out to address 2 problems:
  1. Our low graduation rate (49%)
  2. Our high "chronic" absence rate (the % of students who miss 18+ days of school -- 68)

Although we thought we'd motivate students by engaging their interests, implementing a strengths curriculum designed by Gallup, what we uncovered was a much more basic truth: our students have unmet needs.

This, therefore, is the story of how:
  1. Strengths curriculum is AMAZING and totally worth checking out *cough* teachers!
  2. Unless students have their basic needs met, no amount of engagement will be effective.

So! Please enjoy both sides of this research coin!
