P21, the Partnership for 21st Century Learning, has created many of the frameworks and other resources surrounding 21st century learning. You can find more information at https://www.battelleforkids.org/networks/p21
As citizens living in the 21st century, many students are encountering newer forms of technology and content every day.  These situations often require literacy skills that go beyond what is covered in more traditional English language arts classrooms.  Students who are more proficient in the areas of the four Cs may obtain an advantage over students who have not had experience developing their skills in these areas.  Fortunately, not only does creating virtual worlds provide students with activities that engage their abilities in critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, but it also does so in a way that many students may find engaging and enjoyable!

By completing a virtual worlds project, students will engage in the 4 Cs in the following ways:

Critical Thinking:
  • Create plans and outlines to reach a desired outcome in a timely and efficient manner
  • Find and evaluate resources and assets
  • Make decisions about which narrative elements and assets to include or exclude to best achieve their goals
  • Troubleshoot and solve story and technology issues

Communication:
  • Create text-only and multimodal works that effectively convey both smaller details and larger themes
  • Provide helpful and relevant feedback to peers

Collaboration:
  • Work with peers to find assets and other resources
  • Participate as "playtesters" to help peers identify issues and improve their products

Creativity:
  • Draw upon books, comic books, movies, TV shows, video games, plays, and life experiences as inspiration
  • Take new and original ideas and translate them into a form that can be shared with and experienced by others

...and more!
