How Do Teachers Reach Multiple Learners On Multiple Levels, Without Creating Multiple Lesson Plans?

When creating a differentiated lesson plan, there are two major factors that compete: 1) the teacher’s time and 2) engaging multiple learning levels. How do we create one unit, that engages the entire class, while accommodating different levels of understanding and different learning styles? Is it possible to do, without creating multiple lesson plans for multiple groups within one unit?
