Designing With Audience in Mind

Picture
Before designing the pages on this site, I had to ask myself what my audience would want and need to know. Before that, I had to understand who my audience was! Educators? Parents? Students? Community members? The answer to all of those questions was yes!

I had to think about the kinds of information each of these groups would be interested in, and provide that information in a way that would draw them in and keep them exploring my site. The same philosophy must be implemented when creating lessons for students! (See the SITE model explanation below). Teachers always need to consider the needs of their learners or whomever they are trying to engage in learning.

Here is a prototype of my website, a bare bones attempt at web design.

SITE Model
Points Out Considerations of Background Knowledge To Be Made for Learners/Audience in the Planning Process

Sociocultural -  For students (and their families) whose goals do not include college, it becomes difficult to motivate them to become more engaged and want to demonstrate agency in the classroom. For teachers and administrators, incorporating technology might not be a priority or seen as valuable, especially if they have had success or seen their students do well without it, therefore their motives for doing things differently may be nonexistent.

Informational- For both teachers and students, having the opportunity and exposure to the tech tools and online resources is critical, as they are constantly changing, and having time to explore and evolve is necessary. Teachers would need information about what their students need to feel engaged, motivated, and what would lead to greater agency.

Technical- Providing learners with the time to “play” with new tools is important, but more importantly is making sure they have access to reliable, consistent access to Internet and devices to become familiar with and utilize the tools that will enable them to become more creative and innovative in every class, every day.

My Logo Design

Above are the different iterations of my website logo and tagline. I knew I wanted to include images that symbolized hard work, doing something differently, and the feeling of success and accomplishment. I also knew that I wanted my logo to be student-centered. Of course, I then recognized the importance of representing technology, given that my research heavily relied upon its integration into my classroom. The tagline also needed to focus on students, and I wanted it to be clear to my audience that technology and student voice and choice result in greater student agency. The final version of the logo demonstrates the shift in education toward technology integration, producing students who are skilled, competent, confident, and ready to meet the demands of the real world!
