Next Steps:  The Journey Never Ends

LEVEL ONE

I began this journey trying to imagine a world in which students would be as excited to learn a new skill as they were to level up in a video game.  The energy, focus and commitment that students show toward video games is astounding, and to apply those same things to the classroom would be amazing.  This pushed me to consider all the ways that gaming could become part of the classroom.

LEVEL TWO

This first year of gamificiation in my classroom is my very own 1.0 version.  As I continue to learn and grow, my class game does, too.  I am already making changes - integrating side quests and including badges for my students journey.  This learning has been supported by attending weekly twitter chats (#xplap) with other gamified teachers, listening to podcasts regarding gamification in the classroom (Ready Player One) and continuing to research game mechanics and classroom gamification.

NEXT STEPS

Like the perfect video game, there is no end to my own learning about engagement and motivation in the classroom.  I will continue to pursue information on this topic and look forward to attending the ISTE conference this year>  I am currently taking an online course regarding gamificiation taught by Yu-Ki Chau, a TED talk speaker on the subject.  I also continue to grow my own coding and technology skills through the instruction created by Pamela Fox at Khan Academy.

This amazing journey has been made possible due to the generous donation and support from Napa Learns.  I am grateful to be part of such a supportive and positive teaching community.  Napa Learns provides tremendous opportunities for the teachers of the Napa Valley, and I am grateful for all they have done, and continue to do for teachers.

I am ever grateful for the tremendous learning opportunity provided by Touro University.  The program has brought new ideas, supportive fellow educators and a renewed spirit of curiosity.
