How do teachers assess 21st Century skills?

Districts are looking to integrate new assessments to provide valuable information about the development of key skills, often called “21st century skills,” that will serve students in the future, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation. Unlike the learning outcomes that are traditionally measured, these skills do not yet have widely adopted tools for assessment. In order to recognize and support students as they develop these skills, teachers can incorporate multiple measures such as digital portfolios, complex but open ended tasks, and tasks that employ meaningful, real world contexts.

Proficiency Scales are tools that can be used to help plan instruction, provide feedback on student progress using a variety of assessments, and to help develop capable learners.  I use these as a guide in writing IEP goals.  These scales are valuable when assessing if a student has mastered a particular area and they are VERY helpful when doing Progress Reports!  Below is one example.

AHH, the Bell Curve.  Our district uses the Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Achievement and the Tests of Oral Language when assessing our students for SPECIAL EDUCATION.  When explaining results to eager parents, it is very helpful to refer to the Interpretation of Scores chart below and also this Bell Curve.
