I am forever indebted to Dr. Pamela Redmond for providing this life-changing opportunity for me.  I hope that I can reciprocate some day.  I want to thank the professors for their advice, assistance, knowledge and encouragement.  Thank you Lisa Gottfried, Brenna Curtis, Jane Gould, Scott Marsden, Roger Pence and Marie Zorn.  I appreciate all the work you did for my benefit.

I am very much obliged to Napa Learns for their generous contribution toward my education.  I truly treasure your faith in me and your generosity.  I will use the fruits of your gift to continue my mission to enhance the implementation of 21st Century Skills and Standards based writing instruction in Napa County and beyond.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the members of Napa Valley Unified School District whose encouragement throughout my master's program strengthened my resolve to enhance my education.  I especially want to thank my principal, Mr. Bryan Gardener, for providing the time, components and support I needed to conduct  my research  study.

Visions of a Glorious Future

My education does not end here.

Writing has been a life-long passion.  For too many years, it lay hidden under the No Child Left Behind Act, a school district bankruptcy and the eventual state take over.  The aspects of writing instruction that I knew were effective were frowned upon by bureaucrats.  Nay-sayers ridiculed my notions that strong writing skills produced stronger reading skills.  What did I know?  I was just a teacher. Writing was something you did on Fun Friday if you ran out of paint for the art project.

Touro Univeristy California and Napa Learns yanked me out of the melancholy I felt toward my career.  They not only validated my vision, they also gave me the knowledge and tools I needed to convince others that writing was as equally important as reading and math. I knew months before my master's program began that I would center my research and capstone project on how technology benefits the writing process.  The Innovative Learning Program gave me the technological skills I needed to enhance my expertise in the writing process.  They strengthened my knowledge.

NEXT STEPS:  My Education

During my initial research I learned about the work Dr. Mark Warschauer was conducting in the field of writing and technology at the University of California, Irvine.  I was so impressed with the Writing Program UC Irvine has developed that I contacted Dr. Warschauer.  My next endeavor is to join the UC Irvine Writing Program next summer.  This compact, very intense program focuses on furthering the enhancement of writing instruction through technology.  It also focuses on strengthening the writing skills of the participant.  In other words, this is a dream come true.

NEXT STEPS:  Their Education

My students are in for a treat!  During my master's program, I was a Reading TOSA. Unfortunately, my time with my students was extremely limited.  Next year, I will be back in my own classroom with about 25 bright, shiny second graders.  I can't wait to introduce them to the Wonderful World of Writing and Tech.  I have already started planning on how I will implement the digital writing tools and platforms I've researched throughout my studies.

Although they do not take the CAASPP test, I believe that it is imperative that I teach my younglings how to analyze a writing prompt, and successfully develop a written composition before they promote to third grade.   My goal is to nurture a classroom of life-long writers.

I am very excited about working with the teachers of American Canyon, California.  I have met with several of them, and find them receptive to the innovative ideas I've learned at Touro.  I know that they are inclined to collaborate and keep ongoing communication with group members.  I have already signed up for writing conference hosted by Napa Valley USD.  Many of my new colleagues will be joining me.  I think I have found my dream school-home.
