Collaboration doesn't just happen when assigning group work.  It takes planning on how the task is going to be performed.  Teachers can assign roles, provide guidelines, rubrics, and use technology to assign projects.   On this page you will find a couple of ideas on how to group students for collaborative activities, how to assign roles, and a couple of ideas on guidelines for group-work.  Setting up the expectations before students start the task is a must.  Students need to be clear about not only the task, but how to collaborate with others in order to get the task done.

Collaboration Strategies:

There are many strategies teacher use in their classrooms to implement collaboration.  From number heads, assigning roles, 1,3,6 etc.  Below you will find a couple of videos that mention some of these strategies to give you ideas of which strategy you'd  like to use in your classroom or compare them to the ones you already use in your classroom:
