Unmotivated Readers....
What Can You Do?

Reading is essential for students' success in school and in the work force. One of the main problems that teachers face today is the level of student engagement in the classroom, especially when it comes to reading. This is mainly true with Silent Sustained Reading (SSR), especially with English Learners (EL’s).  Part of it has to do with lack of accountability.  This challenge inspired this investigation to create a more innovative way to motivate students in reading.  Digital tools seem to be a natural choice, since their use is an emphasis for my district and my school.  A decision was made to explore digital journals as a way to motivate and engage them in their reading, and to also continue to instill the 21st century skills that are necessary in this day and age.

The Importance of Using Digital Tools

Our district goals are to instill 21st century skills so that when students graduate, they will be college and career ready.  The 6 C’s are a crucial part of these 21st century skills where students have to learn to collaborate, communicate, think critically, be creative, be good citizens and have good character.  Based on an action research project conducted this year, it was visible that when students were assigned technology based projects, their engagement level increased. So, as teachers, we must find innovative ways to engage students in this technology driven world in order for them to be successful.
