Helping students use 21st century skills to navigate technology

Teachers must allow time for students to play around and explore new websites. Then through that exploration, students will learn skills which will help them in the future.

How can teachers help students learn how to use 21st century skills to navigate new technology to help prepare them for the future?

Students must learn how to use 21st century skills to navigate new technologies in order to prepare for the future. Technology is the key to most classrooms today and can help students become prepared for the real world. A world in which technology is going to be a major part of most careers in the future. Many of the jobs that our students are going to have in the future do not exist right now. The types of jobs available in the U.S. labor market are undergoing significant changes due to the forces of globalization.  Therefore students need to develop skills during school that helps them prepare for any type of career. They need the following types of skills, known as 21st century skills, to succeed: Communication, Critical thinking, Problem solving, Technology navigation, Creativity, Collaboration, Adaptability and Digital Literacy.

Students must be prepared for jobs that may not yet created. This means that students need to develop skills during school that helps them prepare for any type of career. They need the following 21st century skills to succeed:

  • Creativity
  • Collaboration
  • Adaptability

Students will need 21st century skills to help them navigate new technologies in order to succeed. They must be able to figure out how to find the answer to their questions and find if that answer is reliable or not.  For students to thrive and make meaningful contributions, a command of twenty-first century skills such as self-direction, problem solving, communication and collaboration, and technology proficiency are essential (Bruett, 2006).
