21st Century Skills and the Case for Authentic Assessment

Partnership For 21st Century Skills - The Framework

California is a participant in the "Partnership For 21st Century Skills" (P21) in order to promote the skills necessary for our students to find success int he 21st century workplace. The framework defines the learning skills using the 4 C's which include:
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Communication
  • Collaboration

This framework also calls for students to have life and workplace skills consistent with those required for 21st century success. Some of these include:
  • Information and technological literacy
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Social and cross-cultural skills
  • Initiative and self-direction
  • Leadership and responsibility
These are skills that simply cannot be learned or assessed through a traditional assessment model. The need for our students to achieve the skills in this framework is further evidence that authentic assessment is a necessary model. Through engaging in authentic tasks students are building the 4 C's, and simultaneously developing the necessary life and workplace skills!
