21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness

Picture
Click on the video to see what the expectations are for education in the 21st-century and why we need to change our thinking about how and what we teach.

The 21st-Century Skills students used during this project

  • Communication: Students post reflections and responses
  • Collaboration: Students respond to other students’ postings
  • Creativity: Student-centered construction of personal reflections and responses
  • Critical Thinking: Students find evidence and relevance in readings to reflect and respond effectively
  • Character: Students demonstrate safe, respectful, and responsible behavior throughout the lesson progress while reading, handling equipment, and writing / entering / submitting Edmodo postings
  • Citizenship--Local and/or Global: Students demonstrate digital citizenship of appropriate and relevant reflections and responses
  • Student-centered Learning: Students self-select literature including audiobooks from home, local libraries, bookstores, etc. as well as varied options for self-constructed reflections and responses.  Students may also choose to focus on their writing instead of responding to others; although, they will be encouraged to respond to others

"Student Blogging" of reflections and responses prepares them for a career in these ways

  • Improve technology skills (Edmodo gives badges for varied completion levels; it gamifies the learning)
  • Interact with different people and cultures since there would be more time to look at more posts outside of class
  • Develop and improve writing skills
  • Increase communication skills
  • Understand social responsibility online
  • Explore hobbies and special interest areas
  • Develop stepping stones to a future career
  • Learn how to deal with comments
  • Develop social skills for life
  • Engage in social media

Students who blog will be workforce ready!
