So...I guess I'm done learning now...Just kidding! Life is 100% about learning, so this is still the beginning. Undoubtedly, researching this topic in depth has changed the way I will continue to teach. In the future, I plan to continue to experiment with how to bring the most meaningful student interactions to the classroom, those that help peers build positive relationships and facilitate students in helping each other grow academically. Based on the results from my action research, I would like to experiment with ways to challenge the peer teachers, perhaps giving them a turn every three weeks to choose a peer teacher partner to work with while peer learners receive more explicit support from the teacher in a smaller group.

During the research cycle in which students reflected daily on their math work with a partner, there was greater growth in academic vocabulary. I would like to study this correlation. I want to look at how self-reflection, even in 2nd grade, can change the way students learn and grow. Metacognition is key in student improvement and providing students with time to do more of their own self-evaluation can be more useful than having an external figure give them number marks.

My goal is to implement more peer teaching in other curricular areas as well. If it works in math, it likely could be a benefit to students during reading and certain parts of the writing process as well.

I'd like to at the very least, make sure that what I've learned is made available to any who would like to try it out and or improve on it. I feel that, if implemented correctly, peer teaching can not only alleviate the teacher load but leads to better quality instruction and higher student engagement which in turn, increases learning. It's a win, win, win!

Thank You for Helping Me Along My Learning Journey

Napa Learns has provided a scholarship to help pay for this masters degree. I am so thankful for their encouragement of teachers to continue learning and try something new. They host many learning opportunities throughout the year and I am grateful to have been able to participate in and benefit from a number of them.

Thank you to Touro University California for hosting this innovative masters program for educators. My professors are the minds behind the instruction who have shared their passions and a wealth of knowledge and done so ever so patiently in an effort to see their students succeed and grow. A huge thank you to all of them: Dr. Pamela Redmond, Dr. Susan Craig, Scott Marsden, Brenna Curtis, Lisa Gottfried, Marie Zorn. I have also learned a great deal from my wonderful cohort members who have helped and supported me all along the way.

Another huge thank you goes out to my students and their parents during this difficult past school year. Thank you for supporting me and participating in my learning journey.

Thank you to a few individuals who patiently helped me when I needed a helping hand: Janelle Collins, Christian Kuria, Mindy Bañuelos, Manuel de la Rosa, Abraham Baldenegro, and Rafael García Ávila.

The biggest shout out goes to my parents, Arla and Olli Nummelin who, through their own examples, have instilled in me a curiosity and life-long love for learning that I desire to give to each of my students. They are not satisfied with not knowing but search out knowledge to continually grow. I am grateful for their example.
