21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness

In recent years there has been increased worry about students not being truly prepared for their lives outside of K-12 schooling. As technology has increased the rate of change in our society, it has become increasingly difficult for educators to know what exactly they are preparing their students for.
The four C's are, according to the United States based Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the most important skills for students to develop while they are in school. These skills are much more complex and difficult to teach than any content standard, which is probably why they are the most important. Below is a brief description of what the four C's are, and to the right is a description of how my research addresses each of them.

The 4 C's

  1. Communication: Sharing thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions in a respectful and effective manner.
  2. Collaboration: Working together in order to achieve a common goal, putting everybody's talents to the best use possible.
  3. Critical Thinking: Trying to understand information in a new way, making connections across subjects and disciplines, as well thinking independently.
  4. Creativity: Trying new approaches to overcome challenges and being willing to try something that might fail.
