Next Steps in Research Through my research, I discovered this year that it is very difficult to foster true engagement in students. In both rounds of research students reporting true engagement were remarkably consistent, meaning they were probably already exhibiting true engagement before my research began. Students who showed increased engagement during either round of research mostly moved into the strategic compliance level of engagement. This means that students are shifting from being disengaged or working only to stay out of trouble, to working for a reward, praise, or a good grade. While this is an improvement, I would like to see more students being able to develop true engagement with their education. In order to learn more about student engagement and how to better foster intrinsic motivation I plan to independently implement several more rounds of action research next year in my classroom. Specifically I would like to see how both "gamification" and game based learning impact students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I had the opportunity to learn more about both gamification and game based learning this year through my classes with Touro and am excited to study the effectiveness of both teaching strategies next year. |

Professional Next Steps
In regards to sharing my research with other teachers and administrators I plan to share my findings and lesson planning template with the other staff at my school. I also plan to some day write a book for teachers about student engagement. I have a lot more to study and learn before I am ready to do that, but it is exciting to know that I have begun. I have learned this year that teaching at its best is not something you do, rather something you explore, and as I graduate from a fourth to a sixth grade teacher next year I know there will be lots more to learn, explore, and discover.
