TPACK

The TPACK model, developed by educational researchers Dr. Matthew Koehler and Dr Punya Mishra  as a way to help guide teacher understanding on the effective integration of technology in learning. It is designed around the idea that content (what you teach) and pedagogy (how you teach) must be the basis for any technology that you plan to use in your classroom to enhance learning.

My TPACK journey really began three years ago when I came to New Technology High.  The big takeaway as I learn and implement TPACK is technology should not be isolated; we should be using technology to support and enhance our content and pedagogy.

Blogging is a use of technology, we can use this in isolation of content or pedagogy; however it will become form impactful if we put all three together.

SAMR Model

The SAMR Model is a framework created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura that categorizes four different degrees of classroom technology integration. The letters "SAMR" stand for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. The SAMR model was created to share a common language across disciplines as teachers strive to help students visualize complex concepts.

The SAMR Model really pushed my thinking as far as WHY I am using technology.  Working at a school where every student has a device made it easy to just take the same task and do it digitally rather than on paper.  As teachers, it is okay to do this at times but we need to be intentional about when, why and how we use technology.

Incorporating TPACK and SAMR has the potential to change what classrooms look like.
