Integration of Common Core Standards are important to keep the student on track and prepared for the next level of instruction. As a teacher you know that each moment counts; the 50 minutes in the period can fly by, or easily be distracted. Pedagogy is just as if not more important than content knowledge. How we teach and engage students' attention is what makes a teacher great. Including the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies within instruction, and classroom culture will have huge returns on investment, check out the resources page for documented results. CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, is a leader in supporting educators develop their own tool kits, including their 5 SEL Competencies that support student wellness and growth.

CASEL 5 SEL Competencies

CASEL's 5 Competencies balance understanding of self and others to inform responsible decision making. The norms created within the classroom, then extend to the school, and ideally to homes and communities. It takes support on all levels to accomplish this, including buy-in from teachers, administrators, and community partners. The outcomes are clear, our students are better supported, and more often than not, our classrooms become positive work environments for us.

Each of the five domains has sub-domains that reveal the full scope of work within SEL. A seasoned teacher with great rapport with their students may point out that they already do this, but that skill set doesn't have to be based on personal charisma. The CASEL 5 competencies allow for future generations of educator to have scaffolding to organize their own connections with students. Hopefully one day SEL training will be a major part of teacher credential programs.

Our hope is that our students will develop responsible decision-making skills, so they can interact online with integrity and responsibility. The SEL competencies possess all the qualities we seek in proactive digital citizens; this is another reason why SEL integration is so important. If we truly want transliteration between technology and education, we should invest in SEL.  Much of transliteracy involves perspective taking; with SEL we learn to see our perspective as one of many, opening us up to collaborative and innovate with ease.
