Standards Integration

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an element of effectively addressing any standards or content goals. It's the backbone of good pedagogy, engaging students through affect to support learning. The SEL norms reinvent the classroom culture, revealing the skills also necessary to be a leader in the 21st Century.

In practicality, SEL can be integrated during transition times, through ritual use before a test, or at the start of the day. These tools allow our students to focus during class, and do their best; which is all we can hope for each of them.

Applying the Standards

Common Core Standards have to be balanced by the SEL Content Standards. Commitment to this balance has been lead by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and their SEL Competency Standards. 14 major school districts across the United States have adopted these Standards, including Sacramento City Unified School District.

The ACOT (Apple Classroom of Tomorrow) white paper in 2008 noted that the most desired qualities for employers are: work ethic, collaboration, social responsibility, critical thinking and problem solving. These skills were later categorized into the 4 C's of 21st Century Workplace Readiness.

The most complex and informative model for 21st century learning includes the integration of technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge (TPACK). Looking at the interplay between these realms gives teachers the ability to monitor their own methods, and integrate in a way that redefines technology use in the classroom.
