How to I get started using PBL?

I was fortunate to have participated in in a week long beginners course on PBL called PBL World 101 by the Buck Institute for Education.  That was followed with a three day training at New Tech High School a few months later.  As beneficial as that was, it is not necessary to go through formal training to have students benefit from PBL.  These resources are a skeleton for running proper PBL in the classroom along with assessments and links to other sites that are dedicated to teaching through project-based learning.

Guide to creating a project

"I’ve got a great idea for a project.  Now what?"

When designing a project, there are some simple steps to take that can help maximize your results with the project.  There are many ways to create a project, as well as many things that can go in any project, but these links are a basic skeleton of how a project is created.

Project creation

  1. Start with the end in mind

  2. Develop a driving question
  3. Create an entry event/document
  4. Make a know/need-to-know list
  5. Plan out your calendar
  6. Gather resources
  7. Share with another teacher for feedback

Remember, just like any other lesson, the more often your students complete a specific project, the more it will be tweaked to fit the needs of the students.  Do your best not to compare your first few projects with other teachers who have been teaching in a PBL rich environment for many years and have projects that seem to have everything. That can be discouraging and cause you to doubt having a PBL classroom.
