Social Emotional Learning

This study aims to determine how the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent school closures impacted students’ well being and how social emotional learning can help students readjust back into school. Social emotional learning (SEL) is, “as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.” (Casel, 2022). While students were at home remote learning they were not receiving the same social emotional support they would usually get if they were at schools. Various studies have shown that students during the Spring 2020 school closures felt less connected with the school and in general felt stressed and their general well being was below average (YouthTruth Survey, 2021). The goal of this research is to gather data on how students, teachers, administrators and community members feel about schools reopening and the benefits of SEL.
