My journey to becoming a physical education teacher started at a very early age. I fell in love with sports as far back as I can remember and have been involved with them ever since. I played multiple team sports growing up and played football, basketball, and baseball all four years in high school. After high school, I played football at Santa Rosa Junior college. Shortly after that I followed in my father’s footsteps and began coaching at the High School that I attended. Over the course of a few years, I coached football, basketball, and baseball at the varsity and JV levels. Right around this time, I was wrapping up my Bachelor’s in Anthropology at Sonoma State and like many others, trying to figure out what I was going to do next. With a suggestion from a few influential people in my life, I chose to teach PE. I was once again following in my father’s footsteps who taught 7th-grade core and PE for 30 years. Here I am 7 years later teaching Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education.
My goal as a Physical education teacher is to create an environment where my students are excited about sports and physical activity. My hope is that my students have the foundation and love to continue a lifelong journey of physical activity.
I graduated from Sonoma State with my teaching credential in 2015 while student teaching at Kenilworth Junior High. I was fortunate to learn in a PE program that was well established and had very high expectations of their program and students. This built a solid foundation for where I am at today in my journey. From there I was hired at Wright Charter School district where I taught PE at three different schools in the district. After three years in that district, I was hired at Calistoga Elementary school to teach PE in 2018. In 2019, I began working towards my Adapted Physical Education authorization to support students in PE with Special needs. That was very exciting and beneficial in my journey.
After obtaining my APE authorization, I was feeling very excited and motivated to continue my professional development. This amazing opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in Innovative learning through Touro popped into my world at the right time and decided to take the next step in my teaching journey.
Reflections on my Journey...
My Innovative learning journey has been such an amazing and rewarding experience for me. This program timed out perfectly for me as I was embarking on my journey as an Adapted Physical Education teacher. I was in the beginning stages of what I wanted my program to look like and achieve and this master's program allowed me to dive headfirst in. This program has opened my eyes to what is possible in the classroom using technology and developing new modalities to meet the needs of our students.
